Why salons fill up before Cambodian holidays — and when to book

The same rush, three times a year

Before Khmer New Year in mid-April, before the end of Pchum Ben around September or October, and before the Water Festival around November, the same thing happens: everyone wants the same week of appointments. Hair, nail, and beauty bookings spike first, then home cleaning, then car washes — as everyone remembers the drive home is hours of red dust.

It is not just salons. Partners across every category see the same pattern — the last few days before a major holiday are the busiest of their year, and the good slots go days ahead. Walk-ins that would sail through in a normal week get turned away, and the phone-and-Telegram scramble begins.

Why everyone books at once

The holidays themselves explain it. Khmer New Year sends families back to their home provinces for several days, and nobody wants to arrive looking tired. Pchum Ben brings temple visits and family gatherings across its fifteen days. All three holidays mean photos, guests, and the wish to start the season fresh — with a clean house, and a clean car to travel in. None of that is going to change, so the rush is not going anywhere either.

How far ahead to book

Working back from the holiday, this is roughly the margin each service needs. Book earlier than this and you get a choice of times; book later and you take what is left:

• Hair colour or treatments — about two weeks out, since long appointments are the first to go and the best colourists fill first.
• Haircuts and nails — about a week out for a good choice of times.
• Home cleaning — one to two weeks out; cleaners' holiday calendars fill fastest of all.
• Car wash — a few days out is usually enough, but do not leave it until the day before you travel.

Booking around the rush

If the week is already busy, flexibility wins. Weekday morning and early-afternoon slots survive longest, and partners a little outside the city centre — or in a nearby province, if you are travelling anyway — often have room when downtown does not. The crush concentrates on the last two or three days, so sliding your appointment even half a week earlier opens the calendar right up.
